JKBOSE Class 10th Science: Important Chapters Based on Syllabus and Previous Year Papers

Class 10th Science carries 100 marks in the JKBOSE scheme 80 marks for the board theory paper and 20 for internal assessment  and is split into three subjects taught as one paper: Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Every unit in the syllabus has shown up in the board exam every year from 2020 to 2026, so no chapter can be safely skipped. But some chapters carry more marks and appear more consistently as long-answer questions than others, and that matters when a student is running short on revision time.

This analysis is based on the official JKBOSE Class 10th syllabus document and seven previous year Science question papers (2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026).

Quick Summary

Across Physics, Chemistry and Biology, the highest-weightage chapters are Light  Reflection and Refraction (8 marks), Carbon and its Compounds (8 marks) and Life Processes (8 marks). These three, along with Magnetic Effects of Electric Current (7 marks) and Metals and Non-metals (7 marks), have also produced long-answer or numerical-based questions in nearly every paper examined, making them the highest-priority chapters for revision.

Official Marks Distribution

The Science theory paper is worth 80 marks, divided into three sections Physics, Chemistry and Biology with a separate 20-mark internal assessment component. The syllabus specifies marks for every unit within each section.

Biology carries the highest weightage of the three sections. Within it, Life Processes alone is worth as much as an entire unit like Heredity and Our Environment combined, which is one reason it deserves early, thorough revision rather than last-minute reading.

What the Last Seven Years of Question Papers Show

Reading through papers from 2020 to 2026 shows a pattern worth knowing before you plan your revision.

Every chapter is tested every year. There is no unit not even a 3-mark one like Heredity that has been skipped in any of the seven papers reviewed. Students sometimes assume a low-weightage chapter can be left out entirely; the papers don't support that approach.

Some chapters consistently produce the long-answer questions. Light Reflection and Refraction has appeared as a numerical or ray-diagram-based question (mirror and lens formulas, magnification, image formation) in every single paper from 2020 through 2026, almost always worth 5 marks. Carbon and its Compounds has similarly supplied a long-answer question nearly every year, usually asking students to draw structures of organic compounds or differentiate ethanol and ethanoic acid. Life Processes returns just as reliably, most often through questions on nutrition, digestion, excretion or transport in plants.

The periodic classification of elements has disappeared from recent papers. Papers from 2020 to 2023 tested this topic heavily Mendeleev's periodic table, modern periodic table trends, atomic size and valency across periods and groups appeared as full passage-based questions worth 4 marks. From 2024 onward, this topic does not appear at all, and it is also absent from the current syllabus document as a separate Chemistry unit. Students preparing from older papers should be aware that this chapter is no longer part of the current course.

The exam format itself changed starting in 2024. Papers from 2021, 2022 and 2023 followed a 36-question format, with Section-A running from Question 1 to 20 and including passage-based questions where students answered any four out of five sub-parts. From 2024 onward, the format shifted to 40 questions: Section-A (Q1–18) is now straightforward one-mark questions including multiple-choice and Assertion-Reason items, without the passage format; Section-B (Q19–28) carries 2 marks each; Section-C (Q29–37) carries 3 marks each; and Section-D (Q38–40) carries 5 marks each with internal choice. The overall marks total, 80, has not changed, but the question style has. For students, this means the 2024, 2025 and 2026 papers are the most reliable guide to the current pattern, while older papers are still useful for practising concepts but not for the exact question format.

Assertion-Reason questions are now a fixed feature. Every paper since 2021 has included two or three Assertion-Reason questions, typically drawn from Biology topics such as reproduction, decomposers, or heredity, and occasionally from Physics or Chemistry. This question type is worth practising specifically, since it tests understanding rather than memorised definitions.

Chapter-by-Chapter: What to Prioritise

Physics

Light Reflection and Refraction (8 marks) is the single most consistently tested Physics chapter. Expect a 5-mark numerical involving mirror or lens formula, magnification, or a ray diagram for image formation this has come up in some form every year since 2020. Practise ray diagrams for both mirrors and lenses under different object positions, not just the formulas.

Magnetic Effects of Current (7 marks) regularly produces questions on the right-hand thumb rule, Fleming's rules, the working of an electric motor or generator, and magnetic field lines around a solenoid or bar magnet. In 2021 and 2022 this appeared as a detailed passage-based question; in later years it appears as direct short-answer questions.

Electricity (6 marks) almost always includes a numerical on Ohm's law, resistors in series or parallel, or the heating effect of current (Joule's law). These numericals repeat with different values across years, so practising the method matters more than memorising past answers.

The Human Eye and the Colourful World (5 marks) consistently tests myopia, hypermetropia and their correction, along with dispersion of light and atmospheric refraction (twinkling of stars, colour of the sky). This is a comparatively shorter chapter with reliable returns.

Chemistry

Carbon and its Compounds (8 marks) carries the highest weightage in Chemistry and has appeared as a long-answer question  drawing structures, naming compounds, or comparing ethanol and ethanoic acid  in most of the papers reviewed. Soap and detergent action has also been asked directly in 2025 and 2026.

Metals and Non-metals (7 marks) covers reactivity series, corrosion and its prevention, extraction and electrolytic refining, and the properties of ionic compounds. Questions on rusting prevention and the reaction between metals and copper sulphate solution have appeared in multiple recent years, including 2025 and 2026.

Chemical Reactions and Equations (6 marks) is tested every year through balancing equations and identifying reaction types (combination, decomposition, displacement, double displacement, oxidation-reduction). This chapter is largely about accuracy in writing and balancing equations, which is a skill that needs repeated practice rather than reading.

Acids, Bases and Salts (5 marks) consistently draws questions on indicators, pH, and common salts such as baking soda, washing soda and Plaster of Paris. The 2026 paper, for example, asked why a milkman adds baking soda to milk  a practical-application style question that has become more common in recent papers.

Biology

Life Processes (8 marks) is Biology's highest weightage chapter and its most reliable source of long answer questions, covering nutrition, respiration, transportation and excretion. The structure and function of the nephron, and transport of water and food in plants, have both appeared as full 5-mark questions in recent years.

Control and Co-ordination (6 marks) regularly tests the human brain, reflex action, plant hormones (auxin, abscisic acid) and animal hormones (thyroxin, adrenaline, insulin). The 2024 paper asked students to identify the correct sequence of a reflex arc, and the 2026 paper asked students to differentiate between involuntary actions and reflex actions  both drawing on the same core concept.

How do Organisms Reproduce (6 marks) consistently includes a question on Mendel's cross (as in the 2026 paper, involving a TT × tt pea plant cross) or on modes of asexual and sexual reproduction, and often a question on the human reproductive system.

Our Environment (5 marks) covers food chains, ecosystems, ozone layer depletion and waste management, and has appeared in every paper reviewed, often through practical or scenario-based questions such as suggesting measures against water pollution (2026).

Heredity (3 marks) carries the lowest weightage in the entire syllabus but has still appeared every year, usually through a short question on Mendel's experiments, inherited versus acquired traits, or sex determination in humans.

Preparation Strategy

Given the marks distribution and the recurring patterns above, a practical approach is to treat Light, Carbon and its Compounds, and Life Processes as the three chapters to master first, since each is worth 8 marks and each has supplied a long-answer question nearly every year. Magnetic Effects, Metals and Non-metals, Control and Co-ordination, and How do Organisms Reproduce follow closely, given their 6–7 mark weightage and consistent appearance.

Numerical practice matters most in Light, Electricity and, to a lesser extent, Carbon and its Compounds (structural formulas and homologous series). These three areas have produced calculation or diagram-based questions in nearly every year studied, and marks are lost more often through calculation errors or missed diagrams than through not knowing the concept.

Diagram practice matters in Life Processes (nephron, alimentary canal), Control and Co-ordination (human brain, neuron), How do Organisms Reproduce (flower, human reproductive systems) and Magnetic Effects (field lines around a solenoid or bar magnet). Labelled diagrams are asked for directly in Section-D questions most years.

Since the 2024–2026 papers reflect the current 40-question format most closely, solving these three papers under timed conditions is more useful for pattern familiarity than solving pre-2024 papers, even though the underlying concepts in older papers remain valid for revision.

A Note on Reliability

These observations are based on seven previous year papers and the current official syllabus. Examination patterns can change from year to year, and a chapter appearing frequently in past papers is not a guarantee that it will be tested the same way again. Students should prepare the complete syllabus rather than relying only on the chapters identified here as high-priority.
