University of Kashmir Opens Applications for Leftover Seats in Masters in Biotechnology 2026
The Directorate of Admissions and Competitive Examinations, University of Kashmir, has invited online applications for a few leftover seats in its two year Masters Programme in Biotechnology for the 2026 academic session. If you missed out earlier or are only now becoming eligible, this is a fresh window worth knowing about.
The seats being filled are under General and Reserved quota (which includes OBC, SC and EWS) as well as the Self finance quota. The programme is offered through the Department of Biotechnology at the university, and this round is meant for Non GAT B candidates, meaning you do not need a GAT B score to apply.
Important Dates You Should Note
Online applications open on 30 July 2026 and close on 7 August 2026. That is a short window, so it helps to have your documents ready in advance rather than scrambling at the last moment.
If your application fee shows as pending or unreconciled, you get a small grace period after the deadline to sort it out, and we explain that further down.
Who Can Apply
You are eligible if you hold any graduate degree with Biotechnology as one of your subjects, along with a minimum of 12 credits in one of the following: Bio chemistry, Botany, Clinical Biochemistry or Chemistry, whether earned under CBCS or the NEP 2020 scheme.
You can also apply if you have a Bachelors degree in Agriculture, Microbiology, Veterinary and Fishery Sciences, Pharmacy, or Medicine (MBBS or BDS).
A B.Sc in Biological Sciences or Chemistry qualifies you too, and so does a Bachelors degree in Agricultural, Veterinary and Fishery Science, Pharmacy or Medicine (MBBS) or BDS.
If you hold a B.Tech in Biotechnology, you are eligible as well.
In short, the university has kept the eligibility fairly wide, covering graduates from several life science and allied backgrounds, as long as you meet the credit requirement where specified.
How Seats Under Each Quota Will Be Filled
The notification makes an important point about reservation. If fewer candidates apply under a particular reserved category than the number of seats available in that category, the leftover seats will not stay vacant. They will move to Open Merit and get allotted purely on the basis of your rank in the entrance test.
This matters if you belong to a reserved category with limited applicants this year. Your chances under Open Merit may actually improve, but only if your entrance test performance is strong enough.
How You Will Be Selected
Selection is primarily through KUET, the university's common entrance test. However, if the number of candidates applying turns out to be less than the number of available seats, the university will fall back on the percentage you scored in your qualifying examination instead of the entrance test.
So depending on how many people apply, your admission could rest either on your KUET performance or your graduation percentage. It is a good idea to prepare for KUET regardless, since you will not know in advance which route will apply.
Applying Online Step by Step
You need to visit either www.kashmiruniversity.net or www.kashmiruniversity.ac.in and click on the Admissions link. Read the registration instructions carefully before you begin, since mistakes at this stage can cause delays later.
First time applicants must register themselves by clicking on Register as Student. Save your username and password somewhere safe, because you will need them again to check your application status later.
Once registered, log in and enter your registration number to proceed. You will then need to fill in your personal and academic details, and upload a recent passport size photograph, your marks certificate from the qualifying examination, and your reserved category certificate if that applies to you.
Before final submission, review everything carefully. If you spot an error, you can go back using the Previous button, fix it, and then submit again. Once you are satisfied, pay the online application fee of Rs 900, which is non refundable. Take a printout of your submitted form and note down your Form Number, since you will need it for any future reference or query.
You do not need to send a physical copy of your form or fee receipt to the university. Just keep the printouts safely with you, because you may be asked to produce them later during document verification.
Check Your Fee Status After Three Days
This step is easy to overlook but important. Three days after you submit your form, log back in and check whether your payment status shows as Fee Received. If it instead shows Fee Reconciliation Pending or has not updated at all, raise a query online through your dashboard first.
If that query does not get resolved, you will need to visit the IT Cell near Rumi Gate at the University of Kashmir in person, carrying your Application Form, fee receipt and other documents. You must do this within two days of the application deadline, which works out to 4 August 2026. After that date, the university says it will not entertain any such claims, so this is not something to delay.
Your Certificates Will Be Verified Later, Not Now
The Directorate will not check or verify your academic or category certificates while you are submitting the form online. That responsibility rests entirely with you, to make sure you actually meet the eligibility criteria for the programme before you apply.
Verification happens later, at the Department of Biotechnology, once you are provisionally selected. If it turns out at that stage that you did not meet the eligibility criteria on the relevant date, or that you concealed or misrepresented any information, your admission will be cancelled, even if you were already provisionally selected.
A Word of Advice
The university has specifically cautioned candidates not to wait until the last date to submit their forms. Server load and last minute rushes are common reasons applications fail to go through in time, and the Directorate has made clear it will not take responsibility for submissions that fail because of this. If you are eligible and interested, it is worth applying well before 7 August 2026.
