J&K Schools to Reopen on Monday, 27 July 2026 as Summer Vacation Gets Extended

Sakina Itoo, Minister for School Education, Jammu and Kashmir, has announced that summer vacation for all government and recognized private schools across the Union Territory now stands extended till 26 July 2026, as heavy rain and unsettled weather continue to affect large parts of the region. Classes will resume on Monday, 27 July 2026.

The Minister's first post covered the Kashmir Division and the Winter Zones of Jammu Division. A short while later, she posted a follow up clarifying that the same order also applies to the Summer Zones of Jammu Division. In simple terms, this extension is not limited to one part of the region. It covers every government and recognized private school in Jammu and Kashmir, regardless of which division or zone they fall under.
The follow up confirmation was also reposted by the Information & PR Department, J&K, which adds to its credibility as an official update rather than an unverified claim.
Why the vacation was extended
This break has not stayed the same since it began, and the reason keeps shifting with the weather.
It started on 6 July, when the Directorate of School Education Kashmir declared a two week summer vacation because of a persistent heatwave across the Valley. Schools were originally due to reopen on 20 July.
The heat had not eased by then, so the government pushed the date back by three more days, moving reopening to 23 July.
Around 19 July, the weather turned. Heavy rain set in across large parts of Kashmir and Jammu division, and in some districts it triggered flash floods and landslides. Because of this, the vacation was extended again, this time till 26 July, with schools now set to reopen on Monday, 27 July. So in short, we started the month worried about heat and are ending it worried about rain, and the school calendar has moved along with both.

That is really the core of what has changed. Every student, parent, and teacher in J&K now has three extra days before classes start again.
What students and parents should do
The only request made by the Minister is that everyone stay safe, remain vigilant, and follow the advisories issued by the concerned authorities. Given that this extension follows real flooding and landslide activity in parts of J&K, those advisories most likely relate to weather safety and local disaster management updates, so it is worth keeping an eye on alerts for your specific district.
About the graphic doing the rounds on social media
Several posts circulating online, including one that many readers have sent us, list 25 July as the last day of vacation. We checked this against the Minister's own post and against every credible news report we could find, and all of them say the vacation runs till 26 July, with schools reopening on Monday, 27 July. We were not able to independently verify the exact order number printed on that graphic against an official government source, so we are treating 26 July and 27 July as the correct dates to go by. If you have seen that post, this is the correction to keep in mind.
What happens next
As things stand, schools across Jammu and Kashmir are expected to reopen on Monday, 27 July 2026, for both government and recognized private institutions. The government has not said anything yet about whether this extended break will affect the exam calendar or syllabus completion, so treat the academic schedule as unchanged until you hear otherwise from your school.
No further extension has been announced, but this is already the second time the reopening date has moved this month, so we would recommend checking official channels close to 27 July, just in case the rain forces another change. We will update this article if that happens.
